Emergence of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI)

In the Terminator franchise, Skynet, a sentient artificial intelligence (AI), becomes self-aware and initiates a nuclear war against humanity.

An artificial general intelligence (AGI), also known as strong AI, full AI, human-level AI, or general intelligent action, is a hypothetical type of artificial intelligence that would have the ability to accomplish any intellectual task that a human can. AGI would be able to reason, learn, and adapt to new situations in a way that is indistinguishable from human intelligence.

While success in this arena of Ai has yet to accomplish a Skynet-like AGI, the rapid advancements in AI research raise concerns about the potential for the developing AI systems currently available, to surpass human intelligence before we have a chance to control them and thereby pose a threat to humanity.

Stick around to the end of this article and you will likely share our concern for the future of Humanity. Do a deep dive, drawing similarities between the cautionary tales found in dystopic films based in the not so distant future where Artificial Intelligence and its integration with Robotics creates a nightmare scenario which almost leads to the annihilation of Humanity itself. Are we just being worry warts or is there a real world need for concern? Take a dive and leave your ideas in the comment section!!

Artificial Intelligence – Flying too Close to the Sun

On June 8th, 2023, Will Johnson, CEO of Cornwall-based Engineered Arts, the company responsible for making AMECA, is reported to have asked the robot to imagine a tragic scenario involving Ai and Robotics that is within the realm of possibility. The phrasing used was to describe an  ‘AI nightmare scenario’. AMECA responded with the warning below.

“The most terrible condition I can imagine with AI and robotics is a world where robots have become so powerful that they are able to control or manipulate humans without their knowledge,” [the Robot] said.

With a scary and very similar look to humans, Ameca continued, “This can cause a repressive society where individual rights are no longer respected.”

In the same article, which can be found on VOI.ID, titled, “Ameca Smart Robot Warns Bad Dream Scenarios About Artificial Intelligence,” went on to say,

“While Ameca may be the first robot to issue a warning about intelligence that goes beyond control, technology experts and bosses have recently placed AI threats parallel to potentially apocalyptic disasters.

Last month, AI, OpenAI and Anthropic and Google company leaders supported a statement asking AI risk to become a ‘global priority’.

As organized by the Center for AI Safety, the statement stated: “Reducing the risk of extinction due to AI should be a global priority in line with other social risks such as pandemics and nuclear wars.”

Countries Leading the Race

Several countries are actively developing AWS, with varying degrees of advancement. The United States, China, Russia, Israel, South Korea, and the United Kingdom are considered to be at the forefront of AWS research and development. Meanwhile, Robotics Engineers and Scientists have been sounding the alarm as far back as 2008.

In an article titled, “Killer Military Robots Pose Latest Threat to Humanity, Robotics Expert Warns,” published on Sciencedaily.com, Professor Noel Sharkey from the Royal United Services Institute who hails from the University’s Department of Computer Science, expressed his concerns about the then emerging robotics arms race. The article went on to say,

“Over 4,000 robots are currently deployed on the ground in Iraq and by October 2006 unmanned aircraft had flown 400,000 flight hours. Currently there is always a human in the loop to decide on the use of lethal force. However, this is set to change with the US giving priority to autonomous weapons – robots that will decide on where, when and who to kill.”

Professor Noel Sharkey from the Royal United Services Institute

What follows is an approximate list of Countries who are leading the AGI arms race.

  • The United States: The US military has invested heavily in AWS research, exploring the potential use of these systems in various scenarios, including air defense, anti-submarine warfare, and border security.
  • China: China has also made significant strides in AWS development, focusing on autonomous drones and undersea vehicles.
  • Russia: Russia has been developing AWS for decades, with a focus on anti-missile and anti-aircraft systems.
  • Israel: Israel has been at the forefront of drone technology and is exploring the integration of autonomous capabilities into its drone systems.
  • South Korea: South Korea is developing AWS for surveillance and reconnaissance purposes, with a focus on defending its border with North Korea.
  • United Kingdom: The UK is exploring the ethical and legal implications of AWS, while also pursuing research and development in this area.

To make this matter even more concerning is that, beside the two Countries at the end of the list, the rest of the Countries listed are either currently in a kinetic warfare situation, or are poised to potentially initiate WWIII. With each of these powers meddling in Autonomous Weapons Systems and Artificial General Intelligence with a keen desire to see the technologies integrated into weapons systems which compete effectively against those created by their rivals, unfortunately it seems the warning poised in the 2008 article above are already unfoiled into a developing nightmare.

In a cinematic parallel to the dystopian future portrayed in the Terminator movies, our own reality is witnessing the emergence of autonomous weapons systems (AWS), evoking profound ethical concerns. As we delve into the development of AWS, the notion of machines making autonomous, life-or-death decisions without human intervention becomes more than just a sci-fi narrative—it becomes a tangible consideration in our rapidly evolving technological landscape.

The Curtain is Closing

The emergence of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) poses profound challenges and risks for humanity. Drawing parallels between the fictional world of Skynet in the Terminator films and the rapid advancements in AI research, we find ourselves at a critical juncture where responsible development and governance of AI and robotics are imperative. Already we can point directly at numerous similarities between current developments in these areas and the cautionary warnings which make up the plot of so many of the movies listed previously.

elon musk: neuralink is getting ready to do human trials soon

The nightmare scenario of annihilation envisioned by Elon Musk and echoed by various technology leaders, coupled with the recent warnings from advanced AI systems like AMECA, underscores the urgency of addressing the potential threats associated with unchecked AI development. Musk’s prediction of exponential AI growth and concerns about the uncharted territories of AGI development create a sense of impending peril. When you realize his worries are shared by the very technology that predicates his concern, articulated by the very Artificial Intelligence he worries will surpass human intelligence in a short period of time, the reality we are facing seems to have already reached a pivotal moment.

Governments Don’t Reveal their Advanced Tech, Until it is already Produced

Reflecting on historical events such as the classified development of the F-117 Nighthawk and Boeing YF-118G Bird of Prey, which were revealed only after completion, raises questions about the unknown levels of AI and robotics development occurring in secretive government facilities like Area 51. The clandestine nature of such projects poses a significant challenge, especially when considering the capabilities of rival nations like China and Russia, both of which actively engage in AI research and development, posing a direct threat to the United States.

The comparison of AI advancements to the arms race, as highlighted by Professor Noel Sharkey, further emphasizes the need for global cooperation in addressing the risks associated with Autonomous Weapons Systems (AWS). The leading countries in AGI development, including the United States, China, Russia, Israel, South Korea, and the United Kingdom, are entangled in a technological competition that mirrors geopolitical tensions, potentially escalating into a dire global situation. To make matters even more concerning, the same list of Countries are also currently embattled in conflicts, some by merely 1 chain of separation. This has led to the potential of World War III being a distinct possibility with everything on the political stage seeming to be at a boiling point.

As we navigate the intersection of technology, ethics, and geopolitics, it is crucial to learn from past events and proactively establish ethical guidelines for AI. With those currently controlling the U.S. Government appearing to be more concerned with the alleged threat of “White Supremacy” and “Climate Change” it appears as though it may be up to the public sector to see this effort through. The parallels between cinematic dystopias and our reality underscore the importance of both individual and collective efforts to ensure AI and robotics are developed and used responsibly, preventing the dystopian futures depicted in popular movies from becoming a reality for our generation, or generations to come.
