After being elected in December of 2020, Michell Bushnell was sworn into office as Humboldt County’s 2nd District Supervisor on January 3rd, 2021.
In the last 3 years, Michelle has proven her leadership roles by representing Humboldt County with the same passion, and transparency that got her elected.

Michelle is a CSAC (California State Association of Counties) board voting member for Humboldt County.  The primary purpose of CSAC is to represent county government before the California Legislature, administrative agencies, and the federal government. CSAC places a strong emphasis on educating the public about the value and need for county programs and services.

Michelle is the LAFCO chair for the current workforce board
LAFCos are responsible for coordinating logical and timely changes in local governmental boundaries, conducting special studies that review ways to reorganize, simplify, and streamline governmental structure, and preparing a sphere of influence for each city and special district within each county.
The Commission’s efforts are directed toward seeing that services are provided efficiently and economically while agricultural and open-space lands are protected. To better inform itself and the community as it seeks to exercise its charge, each LAFCo must conduct service reviews to evaluate the provision of municipal services within each county.

  • Michelle is the appointed alternate representative for Humboldt for the Rural County Representatives of California.
  • Michelle’s assistance was fundamental to The Garberville Vets Hall being rebuilt which has been a staple in the community.
  • Michelle is a voting member for Humboldt’s first 5.
  • Michelle presented The Smart Easy Pay to Humboldt County and the board adopted it in 2022.
  • In December 2022, Michelle helped her District in Earthquake response and recovery.
  • Michelle was instrumental in the success of The 2023 Operation Hay Drop which was crucial in helping our local ranchers and animals that couldn’t help themselves.

Michelle continues to support her community at large. If there is a community event, she is most likely there, volunteering wherever she can. She is always the first to raise her hand to help whether it be serving breakfast to Veterans, volunteering at a local school fundraiser, acknowledging local service groups for the hard work, or even just showing up as a supporter.

Michelle, a Southern Humboldt Native, was raised by her grandparents on the Kinsey Ranch in Benbow. She attended Redway Elementary, Miranda Junior High, and graduated from South Fork High School class of 1988.

After starting her family when she wasn’t taking care of her own children, she drove a school bus for 13 years safely transporting her precious cargo on our challenging rural roads.

Together she and her husband David have a blended family of 6 kids that they have raised in Southern Humboldt Their children have started families and have remained active community members.

Michelle and her husband David currently reside in Blocksburg on their working ranch with cattle, horses, and other livestock that they own and operate. Michelle and Dave also harvest timber using sustainable and regenerative logging practices. It is their hope that this business will continue to thrive and support the future generations of their family.

Her husband David is a local land surveyor and a supportive spouse in all of Michelle’s endeavors. Michelle also owns and operates several businesses in Southern Humboldt including The Bootleg, Bootleg Trucking, and property rentals. Her long-time involvement in local commerce eventually led to her role as president of the Garberville/Redway Area Chamber of Commerce for many years.

Michelle can relate to the average person and has been transparent about her past, she was a single mom, she understands what it feels like to struggle and work hard for what you have, she drives our county roads daily, and she has compassion for mental health, having her own mother homeless and struggling with mental health before passing at a young age. She wants to advocate for her fellow community members whether it be a small or large issue. She is here to listen and help find a solution.
